UX Research: Immersive Learning

Investigating student engagement through VR environments on Spatial.io.

UX Research Final Prototype

01. Project Overview

This research explored the critical issue of student engagement in university classrooms. We investigated why traditional passive teaching leads to a loss of interest and how immersive VR learning experiences could restore focus and motivation.

02. Research & Methods

We used mess mapping to organize factors related to motivation and attention, and conducted secondary research on emotionally meaningful experiences. We surveyed 24 NYU students to understand causes of boredom and familiarity with immersive tech.

The Challenge Findings revealed that many students struggle with attention not due to a lack of interest, but because classes often lack active interaction and meaningful engagement.

03. Prototyping on Spatial.io

Using Spatial.io, we prototyped a VR museum environment. We conducted user testing with students to observe behavior and movement, focusing on whether the immersive setting improved their connection to the content.

The Solution Based on user feedback regarding motion sickness, we refined the prototype with clearer directional cues and informative panels to ensure a smoother learning experience.

04. Findings & Reflections

User feedback showed that the VR space successfully enhanced focus, though technical issues like dizziness persist. This project highlighted that user testing is essential for uncovering hidden interaction problems in spatial environments.
